From the time I was a little child, I had what you would call a religious up bringing. At a very early age we were taught the 10 commandments. Actually the 10 commandments have played such a great part in my life I cannot remember when I learned them. Though I do remember having to learn them by heart for Sunday school, however that was more about trying to memorize what order the 10 commandments came in rather than learning what they were all about.Since the 10 commandments have been a part of my life as a young child, I have not spent much time reflecting on them. Just like the other aspects of my life, I have accepted the 10 commandments as a fact of life. I have spent more time thinking about them in recent times due to the media attention of having the 10 commandments displayed in public buildings. This made me stop and review closely what the 10 commandments are and as to why someone may be offended seeing them in print. I had to stop and reflect if I had just acknowledged something that may be offensive just because it has always been part of my life.I have to confess that trying to remember the 10 commandments in sequence was a true memory exercise. Though I could remember all of them, trying to get the middle ones in the right order was a challenge. One day I had mentioned this to my husband and he couldn’t comprehend why being in a particular order would make any difference. He had a good point there, that it didn’t matter what order I placed them in or what precise wording I used to remember them, but the idea behind each of the 10 commandments that was the message we have to take to heart. After pondering over each of the 10 commandments I m certain that for me they are not offensive. By displaying or seeing them in print, I would not feel discriminated against or violated in any way. The message behind each one of the 10 commandments is clear and on the whole I feel they out line an honest and courteous way to conduct my life. At the same time I do respect others beliefs and accept that not everyone has the same set of beliefs that I have. I think life would be boring if we did all think the same and had the same beliefs. I realize that we are not all from the same belief system, but I still cannot comprehend why someone would be hurt by seeing the 10 commandments in print. On the other hand there are several billboards and bus advertisements that I find offensive, but for sure I know there are others that disagree with me. At times if I find something offensive I try to look at something that is more appealing to me.Surely we do not all need to believe the same things in order to exist together, we do not even need to understand each others beliefs, we just need to learn tolerance. Hey, guess what… maybe I just came up with the 11th commandment!
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can have many negative affects on your health, leading to a number of dangerous illnesses including:• Heart disease• Stroke• Heart Attack• Kidney problems• Blindness• Dementia• DeathHigh blood pressure is often referred to as the “silent killer”, because many who have it are oblivious to their condition until they experience a heart attack or stroke. Regularly monitoring your blood pressure and making effective lifestyle changes to control hypertension, greatly reduces your risk of developing dangerous health complications, and can even help you avoid, prolong or reduce your need for medication. The following are 10 ways you can effectively reduce your chances of developing serious complications related to high blood pressure:1. Loose the extra weight – Did you know blood pressure usually increases with weight gain, and decreasing your weight by 10 pounds can help you lower blood pressure? Thus, the more pounds you lose, and the closer you are to your ideal body weight, the better chance you have of keeping your blood pressure in check. In addition, a healthy weight loss plan also improves the overall effectiveness of blood pressure medication2. Regular exercise – Staying active is a great way to keep in shape and control blood pressure. Engaging in regular exercise (a minimum of 30 – 60 minutes everyday or every other day) will help you decrease your risk of developing hypertension.3. Improve your diet – Eating healthy by lowering your intake of foods that are high in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol and adopting a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grain and low-fat dairy products, can do wonders for improving your blood pressure.4. Lower your salt intake – A diet rich in sodium can increase your blood pressure. Salt is naturally found in many of the foods and beverages we consume. Therefore, refrain from adding salt to food, limit your intake of processed foods, read the labels of the foods you buy, and eat more fresh foods so you can enjoy the natural flavor.5. Drink alcohol in moderation – Drinking alcohol in moderation (a single drink – IE a glass of wine or beer per day) has its health benefits. However, regularly drinking beyond moderation is detrimental to your health and blood pressure.6. Steer clear of tobacco and secondhand smoke – The nicotine in tobacco raises blood pressure by at least 10 mm Hg. Although this is only a temporary increase (lasting up to an hour), if a person is repeatedly exposed to nicotine, blood pressure can remain high constantly.7. Limit caffeine – Studies have found that regular caffeine drinkers have higher blood pressure compared to non-caffeine drinkers. Therefore, if you can live without it, try cutting caffeine completely out of your diet. If not, dramatically reduce your intake by drinking only one caffeinated beverage daily.8. Reduce stress – People who suffer from chronic stress are at a high risk of developing hypertension. If you lead a hectic lifestyle you need to take time out of your busy schedule to relax. You can achieve this through breathing exercises, massage, getting proper sleep, venting emotions, thinking positively and having a sense of humor.9. Visit your doctor regularly – Have a full physical and get your blood pressure checked regularly. If you have hypertension you will probably need to learn how to self-monitor your condition. This will help both you and your doctor find the best treatments for you.10. Find support – There are many people who suffer from hypertension. Befriending others with the same condition or joining a support group can be excellent treatment. Knowing you are not alone, and realizing that others care about your heath and well being, can help you find the encouragement you need to take better care of yourself.

There is a common misconception in the world that having Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a bad thing. While the ADD-wired brain certainly presents some challenges, it also offers some incredible benefits. The following is a list of characteristics that I consistently see in my clients, friends, and colleagues with ADD.1. CompassionPeople with ADD have a tremendous power to connect with other people. But it goes a step further than that. We also have an advanced ability to empathize with others, and to see many different perspectives.2. CreativityI've never met an ADDer who wasn't creative! Writers, painters, musicians, film makers, designers, sculptors, comedians - the list goes on! Artistic talents are abundant. Composers Mozart and Beethoven are believed to have had ADD.3. DriveWhen an ADDer is bored with a task, completing it can seem like torture. But give an ADDer an interesting project to work on and watch out! When we want to succeed, and we have the necessary tools to do so, there is no stopping us!4. Problem Solving Ability ADDers thrive on solving problems and puzzles. Give us an interesting problem to solve and we won't be able to drop it until we've found the solution! Important historical inventors such as Thomas Edison and Thomas Jefferson are believed to have had ADD.5. Hyper-FocusThe ability to hyper-focus is something that ADDers can use to our advantage. When kept under control and directed towards productive tasks, like accomplishing goals and living dreams, it can be an incredible asset that allows us to get the job done, and done well!6. Sense of Humor/Comedic FlairMost ADDers love to laugh, and many also have a knack for making others laugh! Famous comedians such as Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams are rumored to have ADD.7. ResiliencyThere's no denying that even though there are many great qualities that come along with ADD, there are also challenges. But ADDers have an incredible ability to bounce back from those challenges, and others' criticism of those challenges that we've endured.8. IntuitionADDers have a sharp sense of intuition. This may be due to highly tuned levels of perception, or great insight into the human mind, or something else that we have yet to understand. Whatever the reason, it's a very useful gift!9. Idea GeneratingADDers are wonderful idea generators. We don't usually like to be bothered with details, but we can come up with ideas at lightning speed! We're a true asset in brainstorming meetings!10. That "Special Something"Many ADDers feel that they have a unique way of looking at the world, a perspective that others just don't understand. That is, until the ADDer meets other people with ADD! You might say that we're on our own wavelength!© 2004 Jennifer Koretsky
