Once the image is over and possesses dried for as much as a year,a painter often seals the work with a new layer of varnish that could be typically crafted from damar gum crystals dissolved in turpentine. Such varnishes can be taken off without disturbing the oil painting itself, to enable cleaning and conservation. Some contemporary artists decide by no means varnish their work, preferring that the surfaces remain varnish-free.
